The Ultimate Guide of NSW Online White Card Course

The online White Card course in Sydney, NSW

General construction induction training (GIT or white card training) is delivered by registered training organisations (RTOs) approved by SafeWork NSW. The training ensures workers in the construction industry have a basic knowledge of:

  • workplace health and safety

  • the common hazards and risks that can be encountered on construction sites, and

  • how these risks should be controlled.

In New South Wales, students and workers can choose to do white card training online with SafeWork NSW approved training providers. Origin Institute is a SafeWork NSW approved online white card training provider. We deliver the online white card training in connected real-time sessions via Microsoft Teams.

Although the course content and assessments are the same in face-to-face and online courses, there are differences in enrolment, paperwork and assessment procedures. This article provides a comprehensive guide for anyone conducting an online white card course in NSW.

Who can attend an online white card course?

As long as you reside in New South Wales, you can do NSW GIT white card training online. The online course is convenient if you live far away from the physical class location or prefer to study from home.

However, as the online course is delivered via Microsoft Teams and collaboration between the trainer and learners is required during the session, learners should ensure they have suitable IT devices (more details provided in the later section) for online class attendance.

Is the NSW White Card fully recognised if I get it from the online course?

If you complete the online course with Origin Institute, SafeWork NSW will issue your white card, which is fully recognised in Australia.

What should I know about and prepare BEFORE attending an online White Card training?

Some procedures differ when attending online courses, so you must prepare the following things before attending an online class.

1. Evidence of identification (EOI) for Online Class:

To attend white card online training in NSW, SafeWork NSW requires all learners to provide the correct identification documents (Evidence of Identification or EOI) before the course commences. You CAN'T attend the course if you can't show the correct EOI documents.

SafeWork NSW has an EOI Form to help you prepare all EOI documents. Usually, learners are required to provide 100 points of EOI documents.

Origin Institute understands that following the above EOI Form can be somewhat tricky. Therefore, we developed an online EOI calculator/tool* that could assist you in preparing EOI documents with a few clicks.

Once you know what EOI documents you should bring to the class, ensure you have all original copies ready when attending an online class. Your trainer will ask you to show all original copies via webcam. Photocopies are NOT acceptable.

At the beginning of the online class, the trainer and learners will complete SafeWork NSW's EOI Form. You don't need to print it if you study with us. Origin Institute developed our digital interface, allowing students and trainers to collaborate on the EOI Form digitally (This is only available in online courses).

2. PPE Gears for Online Classes:

One of the white card training assessments requires learners to complete a PPE (personal protective equipment) wearing demonstration. Due to online remote delivery, all learners must get the following four PPE gears ready before online class:

  1. Hardhat (Certified to AS/NZS 1801:1997)

  2. Eye Protection (Certified to AS/NZS 1337.1.2010)

  3. Earmuff or Ear Plug (Certified to AS/NZS 1716:2012)

  4. High Visibility Vest (Certified to AS/NZS 4602.1:2011)

3. IT Devices for Online Classes:

We will run NSW online white card classes via Microsoft Teams. You can use any device suitable for running Microsoft Teams (either via browser or app), as long as it is equipped with a microphone and webcam, such as:

  • Windows PC,

  • Apple Mac,

  • iPad,

  • Android Tablet,

  • iPhone,

  • Android Phone.

We strongly recommend using a computer or tablet with a reasonably large screen.

PC and Mac users can run the Microsoft Teams app on either browser or app. If you run Teams on the web page, you need either Microsoft or Google Chrome browser installed to run Microsoft Teams on the web page.

Android and iOS users must download and install the Microsoft Team app from the App Store.

Please check Microsoft Team's website for more details.

4. Comfortable Study Environment for Online Classes:

Another important thing is that you need to prepare a comfortable study environment for online courses, including but not limited to:

  • comfortable table and seating,

  • quiet space,

  • drinking water,

  • food and refreshment.
