If you are completing White Card training in NSW, you must prove your identity before starting your course.

SafeWork NSW requires White Card applicants to provide their training provider with at least 100 points of Evidence of Identity (EOI). Your identification documents must also meet specific requirements. (SafeWork NSW)

Not sure what to bring? This guide explains the NSW White Card ID or EOI requirements, how the 100-point ID system works, and how to prepare before your class.

NSW White Card 100 Points of ID Requirements.

What ID Do I Need for a White Card in NSW?

Before commencing your NSW White Card training, you need to provide at least 100 points of acceptable Evidence of Identity (EOI).

Your combination of documents must establish the required identity information, including your:

  • full name

  • photograph

  • date of birth

  • signature

Your training provider is responsible for checking your Evidence of Identity (EOI). If you cannot provide the required evidence, you may not be able to commence your White Card training.

SafeWork NSW also states that a person must be at least 14 years old to participate in White Card training.

How Does the 100 Points of ID System Work?

Different identification documents are allocated different point values.

You need to bring an acceptable combination of documents that reaches at least 100 points.

SafeWork NSW divides the standard documents into primary and secondary identification.

Primary ID – 70 Points

A primary document is worth 70 points, and only one primary document can be used.

Examples include:

  • Australian birth certificate/card issued by a Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages – 70 points

  • Australian or international passport, either current or expired within the previous two years and not cancelled – 70 points

  • Australian citizenship certificate – 70 points

Secondary ID – 40 Points

A number of Australian photo identification documents are worth 40 points, including:

  • current Australian driver’s licence

  • current Australian learner driver’s licence or permit

  • current state or territory proof-of-age or photo card

  • certain current Australian boat operator photo licences

  • current Australian-issued high risk work licence

  • Australian Defence or Police photo ID card

Secondary ID – 25 Points

Other commonly available documents can be worth 25 points, including:

  • current Medicare card

  • current Centrelink card

  • utility bill, such as water, electricity or gas

  • telephone account

  • property rates notice

  • property lease agreement

  • home insurance papers

  • current motor vehicle registration or insurance papers

  • eligible credit/savings cards or bank statements

  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs card

Examples of 100 Points of EOI for White Card Training

There are many ways to reach 100 points.

For example, someone may be able to use:

  • Passport (70) + Medicare Card (25) + another eligible 25-point document = 120 points

Another possible combination could be:

  • Australian Driver’s Licence (40) + Medicare Card (25) + Utility Bill (25) + another eligible 25-point document = 115 points

These are examples only. Your documents must individually satisfy SafeWork NSW’s requirements and, collectively, establish all required identity information.

It is therefore important to check your documents before the day of your course, rather than simply bringing documents that happen to total 100 points.

Do I Need to Bring Original 100 Points of EOI?

Yes, it is very important.

SafeWork NSW’s conditions state that EOI documentation must be original. Photocopied or certified copies are not accepted for this EOI check. However, where a document was originally issued electronically, such as an electronic utility bill, the digital version can be accepted.

For certificates such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate or change-of-name certificate, an original means a certificate issued by a Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Don’t rely on a photocopy of your driver’s licence, passport or other physical ID. Prepare the required original documents before attending your course.

Do All My ID Documents Need the Same Name?

Your EOI documents generally need to be in the same name and must include your full name rather than initials.

If your documents are in different names because you have changed your name, you will need appropriate documentation issued by a Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages verifying the name change.

For example, this may be relevant if some of your identification remains in your maiden name while other documents show your current name.

Can I Use Documents That Are Not in English?

SafeWork NSW requires EOI documentation to be in English.

Where a document is not in English, it must be accompanied by an English translation issued by a NAATI-accredited translator.

This is particularly important for applicants planning to use identification documents issued overseas.

Can I Use an Overseas Passport for White Card Training?

An eligible international passport can be used as a 70-point primary document.

SafeWork NSW’s EOI table lists an Australian or international passport that is current, or expired within the previous two years but not cancelled, as a 70-point primary document.

However, a passport by itself does not give you 100 points. You will still need other acceptable documents to meet the overall EOI requirements.

I Have Recently Arrived in Australia. What If I Don’t Have 100 Points?

SafeWork NSW provides special Evidence of Identity provisions for some people.

These may apply to:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

  • school students

  • overseas people who have been in Australia for less than six weeks

  • certain other circumstances recognised by SafeWork NSW

If you think a special EOI arrangement applies to you, check SafeWork NSW's Evidence of Identity document (Section 2. EOI Special Arrangements on pages 3 - 6) for what kind of EOI you should bring to your white card training session.

This is especially important for people who have recently arrived in Australia and may not yet have documents such as an Australian driver’s licence, Medicare card, utility bill or Australian bank documentation.

Can I Attend White Card Training Without 100 Points of ID?

Under SafeWork NSW’s RTO conditions, a candidate who does not provide the required minimum 100 points of EOI cannot commence the applicable training.

This means you should not wait until you arrive at your White Card class to work out whether you have enough identification.

Check your documents in advance.

Prepare Your White Card ID Before Your Class

A simple checklist before attending your NSW White Card training is:

  1. Make sure your acceptable documents total at least 100 points.

  2. Check that the combination satisfies all applicable identity requirements.

  3. Bring your original physical documents where required.

  4. Check that your documents show your full name, not just initials.

  5. Make sure documents are in the same name, or bring the required name-change evidence.

  6. If using documents in another language, prepare the required NAATI-accredited English translation.

  7. Contact your training provider before the course if you are unsure whether your documents will be accepted.

Preparing your ID in advance can prevent problems when you arrive for your training.
