Can an EWP Ticket Help You Earn More in Construction? One-Day Training, More Opportunities

Want to earn more in construction? Your next career move could take just one day.

Working as a construction labourer is a great way to enter the industry. But what if you could develop additional skills, qualify for more jobs and potentially increase your earning power?

That’s where an Elevating Work Platform (EWP) ticket comes in.

EWPs are widely used across construction sites, from commercial buildings and warehouses to maintenance and infrastructure projects.

And here’s the exciting part: Origin Institute’s EWP under 11 metres training takes just one day!

One day of training could be your first step towards becoming a more versatile construction worker.

Where Are EWPs Used in Construction?

Walk onto a busy commercial construction site, and you’ll probably see a scissor lift or boom lift in action.

These machines allow workers to safely access elevated areas, making them valuable across many construction activities.

Common applications include:

  • Electrical installation: Installing lighting, cables and electrical systems.

  • Painting and decorating: Accessing high ceilings and external walls.

  • Building construction: Installing ceiling systems, cladding and other building components.

  • Mechanical services: Installing air conditioning, ventilation and ductwork.

  • Warehouse construction: Working on elevated structures and building services.

  • Building maintenance: Accessing elevated areas for repairs, inspections and maintenance.

From construction labourers to qualified tradespeople, EWP operating skills can be useful across many different roles.

The more tasks you’re qualified to perform, the more opportunities you may be able to pursue.

Can an EWP Ticket Help You Earn More?

Let’s talk about something that matters to most construction workers: your pay.

Having additional skills doesn’t automatically mean a higher wage. However, it can help you qualify for jobs that require more than general labouring experience.

What Are Construction Workers Earning in Victoria?

A review of advertised construction and equipment-operation positions in Victoria during October 2026 found the following examples:

General Construction Labourer

Construct Personnel advertised construction labouring positions in Melbourne paying approximately $35–$40 per hour.

Ticketed Construction Operator

Fast Labour Hire advertised construction operator positions in Melbourne paying approximately $38.50–$42.50 per hour, plus additional employment benefits.

EWP Operator / Tree Worker

Active Tree Services advertised Victorian positions involving EWP operation, with earnings of approximately $36–$47 per hour, including superannuation.

These positions have different responsibilities, experience requirements and employment conditions. The ticketed construction operator role may require additional qualifications, while the EWP operator position involves vegetation management rather than building construction.

Nevertheless, they demonstrate the range of opportunities available to workers with specialised operating skills.

Advertised wages were reviewed in October 2026 and may change. These examples are not representative salary averages.

What Difference Could an Extra $5 Per Hour Make?

Imagine you’re currently earning $35 per hour as a construction labourer.

After developing additional skills and gaining experience, you secure a position paying $40 per hour.

That’s an extra $5 per hour.

Over a standard 38-hour working week, the difference could be:

  • $190 extra per week

  • $9,880 extra per year

That’s almost $10,000 in additional annual earnings!

Of course, this is a hypothetical example, not a guaranteed pay increase. Actual wages depend on your employer, role, experience and employment conditions.

But it shows why investing in your construction skills can be worthwhile.

Why Do Employers Value Workers With EWP Skills?

Imagine two construction labourers applying for the same job.

Both have similar experience and hold a White Card.

However, one worker also has nationally recognised EWP training and can competently operate suitable elevating work platforms.

That additional competency may give the employer more flexibility when allocating work.

Here’s why EWP training can be valuable:

1. More Job Opportunities

Some construction jobs require EWP competency. Having the appropriate training may allow you to apply for positions that would otherwise be unavailable.

2. Greater Flexibility on Site

You may be able to assist with general construction duties and operate suitable access equipment when required.

3. Career Development

EWP training can complement other construction qualifications, including forklift licences, trade qualifications and additional plant-operation competencies.

4. Potentially Better Earning Opportunities

Additional skills and experience may help you compete for specialised positions with different responsibilities and pay rates.

The Best Part? EWP Training Takes Just One Day!

You don’t necessarily need to spend weeks studying to develop another practical construction skill.

At Origin Institute, our EWP under 11 metres training is delivered in just one day.

The course combines essential safety knowledge with hands-on practical training.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify hazards and assess workplace risks.

  • Conduct pre-operational equipment checks.

  • Prepare and position an EWP.

  • Operate suitable EWPs safely.

  • Follow appropriate operating procedures.

  • Shut down and secure equipment correctly.

To help you get the most from your practical training, Origin Institute encourages students to complete as much online theory learning as possible before attending class.

Upon successful completion of all required training and assessment, you’ll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and Origin Institute’s digital EWP ticket.

One day. Practical skills. More career possibilities.

Do You Need an EWP Ticket or a High Risk Work Licence?

It depends on the equipment you intend to operate.

For boom-type EWPs with a boom length of 11 metres or more, Australian workplace safety regulations require operators to hold the appropriate WP High Risk Work Licence.

For other EWPs, including scissor lifts and boom-type EWPs below the licensing threshold, workers must still have appropriate training, instruction and competency.

Origin Institute’s one-day EWP training is designed for relevant equipment below the high-risk licensing threshold. It does not replace a WP High Risk Work Licence.
